This is my 1st week of this years participation in a local community supported agriculture farm also known as a CSA. For the next 18 weeks on Fridays between 1-3pm (my designated day) I stop by the farm and pick up my share of this weeks harvest. The beginning is a little sparse, but once it gets going, it is a bag full of fruit, vegetables, flowers and tubers! I chose to pay a little more for my share and opted out of a “work” share that a few hours a week can save you on the cost of a share.
My farm is Stoneridge Farm in Bradford, NH. My share this year was $345. this works out to less than 20 dollars a week for a bag full of organic produce. This week was maple syrup and strawberries. Each week brings a new challenge of different vegetables to cook and experience. I have always enjoyed all vegetables and last years crops broaden my horizons even wider. My husband even increase his vegetable tolerance to an enjoyment! Last year we had scapes for the 1st time – which is the green scallion like top of a garlic bulb at harvest. It makes a delicious pesto for pasta or rice.
Last year I found that having a fresh supply of veggies my weekly grocery bill dropped drastically. I basically bought meat, paper and cleaning products all summer long! I also got a co-worker involved and alternate picking up our weekly shares – saving gas too! There are many farms and can be found at http://www.localharvest.org
