I have a small wind turbine that I would like to use to charge a battery bank.

I would like to take output of the battery bank and route it to a "decision making device" then to my UPS that I run my home office from.

The "decision making device or DMD" will monitor the batteries and then switch the output back to the grid when the total charge in them drops to 20%. After they charge back up to capacity (I know they won't really do 100% but we will call it that) then I want the DMD to switch back from grid to battery.

My UPS will handle the momentary loss of power during the switching.

So right now all I have the the turbine, and the UPS and $500 I must be able to come up with something, right? Help!!!!!

Thanks in advance those of you who are way smarter than me.
Hello,

I will take a look around and see if I can find a solution to your issue.

Rob.
I am using UPS's to power room by room in my "off the grid home" How large is your wind turbine? If you just increase the battery size in your UPS, you can run virtually constantly without having to re-charge from the grid. I have placed my battery banks so that while one bank is charging, I run off the other. I have a low voltage alarm which lets me know when I have to flip the switch to the other banks. If you remove the panel on your UPS, you can see the battery arrangement. Normal for under 1000KvA will have 2 6 volt batteries hooked in series. I removed the batteries, ran "tag" wires, and plugged them to the battery bank switches. If you plan on keeping your existing set-up, check out arduino controllers. You can teach one to switch for you and be way under your 500 bucks. They are very simple controllers, that you can add your switching devices to and presto! Plus, you can post and be a hero! ( I built a couple, but it's been a while and my notes suck) Hope this helps!
If you need some suggestion on power system then the best thing is you have to increase the battery size in your UPS, so you can virtuallyconstantly without having to re-charge from the grid. I have placed my battery banks so that while one bank is charging, I run off the other. I have a low voltage alarm which lets me know when I have to flip the switch to the other banks. Then only your power system will be good.
